February's birthstone, the amethyst, is a form of quartz, which varies in color from pale lilac to dark purple.  It is found in Canada, The U.S., Australia, India, Russia, and Sri Lanka as natural crystals within rocks.
Amethyst has been a foundation of royal jewels throughout the ages, as intense violet is a associated with royalty.  One of the most closely guarded British Crown Jewels is an amethyst.  The stone is also symbolic of spirituality and piety, and often used to decorate religious ceremonial ornaments and rosaries.

February's purple birthstone was historically believed to protect one against addictions, and is symbolic for the power to overcome difficulty.  Whether or not this is true, it's sure to make February birthday readers feel like royalty.

The February born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they, the amethyst will wear.
