Margot Van Voorhies: The Art of Mexican Enameled Jewelry

Margot Van Voorhies Carr was an American artist who moved to Mexico in 1937. She soon met and married Antonio Castillo, one of the owners of Los Castillo silver. Her husband encouraged her to begin designing silver jewelry in his shop under the professional name of Margot de Taxco.

When Antonio and Margot divorced in 1948 she opened her own sliver shop and storefront. Her business cards for her new venture read "As Stars Are to the Night, So Are Jewels to the Woman." She attracted many Hollywood celebrities of the day, John Wayne and Lana Turner, to name a few. A number of other wealthy Americans visited her shop regularly to purchase silver jewelry.

Dr. Penny Morril has showcased Margot de Taxco's artistic talent is beautifully in the color photo book Margot van Voorhies:  The Art of Mexican Enameled Jewelry. Margo de Taxco is one of the best known contemporary jewelry artisans that made silver jewelry in mid 20th century Mexico. The author is a writer and teacher of Mexican art at George Mason University and founded the Spratling Taxco Collection at Tulane University's Latin American Library.

In her Taxco jewelry studio Margot employed many talented silversmiths, some of whom later developed their own silver businesses in the area. Miguel Arias, Miguel Melendez, and Melicio Rodriguez are a few of the designers who started with Margot de Taxco.

Her style is famous for enamel on silver and are typically in an Art Deco, Mayan, or Japanese motif. Margot continued to produce beautiful jewelry until her death in 1974. Her pieces are among the most collectible Mexican silver jewelry today, often fetching thousands of dollars per item.
