Pink Diamonds Are In The News

Late last year I read a few news reports online about really expensive pink diamonds and it got me interested.  I never knew there was such a thing but now they seem to be selling everywhere.  Seems to me like a perfect gift for Valentine's Day so I thought I'd share.

The story that get me started was "The Graff Pink".  It sold at Sothebys auction in Geneva Switzerland on November 16 for $46 million.  That was a world record for a jewel sold at auction.  Billionaire London diamond dealer Laurence Graff paid $46,158,674, for the 24.78-carat "fancy intense pink" diamond, which he immediately named "The Graff Pink." Fancy Intense Pink means it's the purest of pinks.  This diamond is almost flawless and once belonged to American celebrity jeweler Harry Winston.  He sold the diamond in the 1950s to a private collector, who owned it up until 2010, when it was sold at auction.  The Graff Pink diamond is emerald cut with rounded corners, and is mounted on a silver ring with two flanking shield-shaped diamonds.

Another pair that sold the month before were a 6.89 carat stone named "The Purple Pink" which sold at Chrisitie's Auction House in New York for $6,914,500, or $1 million per carat; and the 14.23 carats "The Perfect Pink" sold at Christie's In Hong Kong for $23,165,968. Both were sold in December 2010.  These are shown in the photo below.  Kinda makes Kate Middleton's sapphire engagement ring look pretty tame, no?

I checked eBay and there are some pink diamonds there which I had not seen before.  They are pricey but I expect we'll see more of them around since Valentine's Day is coming up.
