Thomas L Mott Vintage Enamel Charms

A while back I posted some photos of my TLM charm collection.  Since that time I've acquired a few more so I'm updating the pictures.  These are all TLM, mostly enamels, and the bracelet that the British Isle charms are on is also marked TLM.  I believe the filigree bracelets are original to the Thomas L Mott Caribbean island bracelets that were sold as souvenirs.  They are not marked TLM but I've consistently seen them with vintage TLM bracelets I've found in tact.

In my quest I've found that that the Thomas L Mott company is also known for other jewelry pieces.  They are famous for their Butterfly Wing Jewelry, you can find out some of the history on The Jewelry Ring website.  However some of Mott's less known jewelry lines are Sweetheart Badges, which are small pins and jewelry ornaments produced during WWI and WWII with British Military emblems.  They were purchased by soldiers and sent back to their sweethearts at home.   Now these are considered vintage military collectibles.

I've found most information on the Thomas L Mott company to be sketchy.  My research has revealed the company was founded in 1875 and popularized butterfly wing jewelry when they exhibited at the British Empire Exhibition of 1924.   TLM acquired the Henry W. King Co. in 1925 and Owen Brothers Co. in 1933 and became the largest producer of butterfly wing  jewelry of the era.  Then at some point the Thomas L Mott Company was purchased by Shiptons LTD of London which is still in business today.  As I continue to learn I'll inform my readers.  Please leave comments if you know more about this fascinating old jewelry firm.

    Dear Wanda,
thank you so much for creating your site! I’ve just discovered a mid-sixties TLM 7 charm bracelet (England, Jersey, Ireland, Switzerland,Australia, Isle of White & Africa)that belonged to my Gran. It seems to be a mismatch of various collections but I hope to continue to add to the collection.

Is there a reference anywhere of the orginal collection contents and accompanying bracelet design/marks?

Many thanks and greetings from the UK, Pippa x

Have a TLM vintage brooch which I believe is mounted on silver. It is a picture of holly leaves and berries and Christmas roses, so may have been produced especially at Christmas, or may be one of a Seasons collection. It is oval in shape, measuring 5cm in height and 4cm across. I am not sure but the picture looks as if it is printed on material (weave visible under magnifying glass), possibly silk? Reverse of brooch stamped TLM in an artists palette. If you have any info. about this brooch I would be very interested to hear. Please do not use my email address for anything other than to reply to this message.
    Kind regards, Georgie Sabin

It’s likely butterfly wing jewelry. Here’s a good reference to learn about butterfly wing jewelry http://www.oocities.org/froglady2.geo/butterflywing.html

Hi there, thank you so much for this information! I’ve been trying to research a small sterling pin I recently purchased for resale. It is the Royal Hampshire Regiment Crest, marked “TLM Sterling”. I’m so glad to have some information to give to my buyers about this lovely little pin!

Hi: Are the bracelets themselves (not just the charms) you have in your photos also authentic Mott bracelets? I see some distinguishable characteristics in two of them but one of your bracelets looks like a normal link bracelet. Do you know of the various types? Also by any chance do you know if a list exists of all the islands, tropical etc that were made?

    Much thanks!!

Most of the bracelets I have are just normal links. There is a pattern with diamond shaped links that I’ve seen a lot of full TLM bracelets on and that’s likely what was sold on cruise ships with charms already attached. I don’t know of a list anywhere but if you come across one please let me know. Thanks for reading my blog.
