Peter Fagan Colour Box Miniature Collection

Peter Fagan Colour Box CatAnother in my series of articles about my various collections.  This one I started way back when my oldest son was a baby and I was browsing around in a Hallmark store one day.  That was 29 years ago.  The tiny painted resin figurine of a cat curled up sleeping in a basket caught my eye and I purchased it.  Then a couple of years later while living in North Carolina I saw similar animal figurines in a gift shop, and then again a few years later in another location, and so on. At that time I had no idea who made them or where they came from.

Fast forward to modern day eBay and the explosion of collectors clubs.  It didn't take me long to find the same adorable miniatures for sale on-line.  And of course I bought more.  So one day I decided to look into the origin of my little treasures.  They are made by Peter Fagan, who started hand painting them on his kitchen table in Scotland.  Eventually he expanded the business to a staff of 26, with 75 to 100 outsourced painters on contract.

The business went bankrupt in 2000 and I'm not sure exactly why; but now these cute little gems are becoming more in demand and more collectible.  If you want to learn more about Peter Fagan miniatures, and I believe there are several different series, a book is available - "A Collector's Guide to Colour Box - Home Sweet Home and Other Collections", by John Hughes.  This book is out of print but can be found in used bookstores and online.  There is also a discussion board on eBay dedicated to Peter Fagan miniatures and many trading clubs around the world.

I have a friend that has a passion for miniatures. When I want to give her a special prize…I add to her miniature collections. I’m never at a loss as what to give her for her birthday or Christmas.

Like you, Wanda I thought the cats charming and bought some then people started giving me some as gifts. I now have 14 ranging in size from the little cat with the ball up to the fireplace. I haven’t seen them in the shops for years and thought that perhaps they were no longer being imported – I live in Western Australia. I was pleased to read the reason as I was puzzled and saddened that they are no longer being produced.

I have been collecting Peter Fagan’s cats since 1985 when my sister purchased my first one in England. I have over 125 pieces. I am always looking for more. Are you selling any of your collection?

I decided to sell my collection and there are a few left in my eBay store. My store name is Charmcrazey and the link is in the sidebar of any page on this blog. It’s titled Fitzcharmings eBay Vintage Jewelry but I have a few Peter Fagans too. Thanks for your interest and for reading my blog.
